About Aline Aronsky

I came to photography through anthropology. Long before I picked up a camera, I was interested in how people build meaning, identity, and community in ways that differ from my own.

That curiosity has stayed with me, but so has a sense of responsibility. Photography has a long history of flattening or misrepresenting the people it depicts, so I choose subjects I have a genuine connection to. I spend months getting to know a community before I make work, approaching each project as much through listening as photographing.

Much of my practice centres on the body—pain and pleasure, intimacy, endurance, and the ways physical experience shapes identity. I'm especially drawn to subcultures that are often misunderstood or pushed to the margins, not because they are unusual, but because they reveal something deeply human. My aim is not to explain these communities, but to document them with care, curiosity, and respect.
